The Northwest Conservation District (NWCD) will host its 43rd annual Earth Day Plant Sale at the Goshen Fairgrounds, April 25th-27th, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. For sale will be a beautiful and varied selection of native and beneficial plants, for garden habitats.

A great way to celebrate Earth Day is to incorporate native plants into your landscape. Native plants are those that have developed naturally in a specific geographic area, without human input. They evolved side-by-side with native wildlife – animals, birds, insects – and thus have an integrated relationship. Native wildlife need native plants in order to thrive. Unlike non-native ornamentals, which often provide limited food or shelter, native plants are essential for the survival of our local ecosystems. For example, our native oaks support over 500 native butterflies. Invasive Phragmites supports 170 species in its homeland, while supporting only 5 species here. By choosing native plants, you're not just beautifying your yard; you're actively contributing to the health and biodiversity of our community.

Beyond their crucial role in supporting wildlife, native plants offer numerous environmental benefits. Adapted to our local climate and soil conditions, they require less maintenance than non-native alternatives, reducing the need for excessive watering, fertilization, and pesticide use. Their deep root systems play a vital role in preventing soil erosion and enhancing water infiltration, contributing to improved water quality and a healthier watershed.

Many perennials will be available for purchase during the sale.  To assure the availability of your favorite plants, you can pre-order online at www.nwcd.org/shop or by mail with a check! Pre-orders close April 16th. Find the catalog online or at your local town hall or library.

In addition to plants, we will also offer a plethora of free educational literature, coloring pages and activities for kids, and more! Learn more about the importance of native plant ecosystems, discover tips for creating your own wildlife-friendly garden, and explore the many ways you can contribute to environmental conservation.
