On June 22, the Women United Infinity Group of the United Way of Northwest Connecticut partnered with a youth group through New Opportunities in Torrington to offer Healthy Bites and Kitchen Basics, a hands-on cooking program designed to teach practical kitchen skills, healthy eating habits, and self-confidence to local middle school girls.

Sixteen students participating in New Opportunities’ youth program took part in the four-week series, which supported United Way’s impact areas of Healthy Community and Youth Opportunity. The classes provided participants with the opportunity to learn essential life skills while preparing nutritious, affordable recipes they can recreate at home. The program also addressed the needs of families who are ALICE® (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) households that work hard yet often struggle to afford the basic cost of living. In Northwest Connecticut, many families are just one unexpected expense away from financial hardship, making practical life-skills programs like this especially meaningful.

New Opportunities connected youth participants to the program, while Saint Maron Church in Torrington generously provided the use of its kitchen facilities, creating a welcoming environment where students could gain hands-on experience and build confidence in the kitchen.

Each class combined nutrition education with practical cooking instruction. Participants learned how to read recipes, measure ingredients, practice food safety, and prepare a variety of healthy foods ranging from snacks and appetizers to family-style dinners and desserts.

The first session focused on healthy snacks and recipe reading. Students prepared yogurt parfaits and five-ingredient no-bake oatmeal peanut butter balls while learning how simple ingredients can be transformed into nutritious, appealing snacks.

The second class introduced healthy appetizers and reinforced recipe-reading and measuring skills. Participants prepared dill pickle dip and a cheeseball while becoming more comfortable using common kitchen tools and following step-by-step instructions.

During the third session, students learned basic knife safety and food preparation techniques, including chopping garlic, onions, and parsley. They then applied those skills to prepare turkey meatballs, homemade pasta sauce, and pasta, gaining experience in creating a complete family-style meal.

The program concluded with a dessert class in which participants made a no-bake cheesecake. By the end of the series, students had developed skills in following recipes, measuring ingredients, practicing food safety, and preparing a variety of dishes from snacks to full meals and desserts.

Beyond cooking, the classes fostered patience, teamwork, problem-solving, and self-confidence skills that extend well beyond the kitchen.
