Stock the Shelves; A Success for Torington FISH
2800 cereal boxes lined up domino-style before a chain of toppling boxes was set off
On Friday, October 18th, Saint John Paul the Great Academy in Torrington made a memorable effort to support their local community by toppling 2,800 cereal boxes like dominoes in their gymnasium. The Catholic school, with 200 students and a group of dedicated parent volunteers, had been collecting the cereal for months from grocery stores, parish halls, and school collection boxes.
As students gathered in the gym bleachers at 9 AM, they were greeted by the words "SJPTGA TOPPLES HUNGER" spelled out with cereal boxes. The crowd erupted with excitement as Father Emmanuel triggered the domino chain, and after nearly three minutes, all the boxes had fallen, followed by a burst of applause.
Afterward, parent volunteers and the "Stock the Shelves" team loaded the cereal into vehicles for distribution to twelve food banks across northwest Connecticut. Over the past three years, SJPTGA has contributed more than 7,000 boxes of cereal to help address local food insecurities, in addition to other food drives held by the school and parish throughout the year.
