Gifts From The Heart: The Joy of Giving This Holiday Season

The holiday season is a time of joy and celebration.  It is a time to reflect on what truly matters.  Whether it starts with a deep desire within or an epiphany, the result is the same.  It sparks a desire in us to give to those in need.

When it comes to giving, there are so many opportunities to choose from, and everyone can participte.  Simple acts of kindness can warm even the frostiest hearts.  Helping a neighbor, volunteering to serve at a soup kithchen, organizing a food drive, and collecting gently used clothing is always welcomed.  And for those who are able, charitable donations can make all the difference in the life of someone in need.

If you are lookng for ways to share your generoisity, consider checking with your local houses of worship. The bulletins and event calendars are always listing opportunities for collecting food, diapers, toys, and gently used clothing.  Good Will (Torrington, CT) is always open to receiving new/gently used clothing.  Consider making a monetary or gift card donations.  The United Way of Northwest Connecticut will ensure that your donation is directed to the most pressing needs in our community.  Participate in or sponsor a food drive to benefit our local food pantries and soup kitchens.  Support Litchfield Social Services with their food drive for their Thanksgiving Baskets of Fresh produce and herbs, which can be dropped off at St. Anthony’s Church (Litchfield, CT) on Nov. 15, 16, and 17 (by 9 AM).  And don’t forget our local shelters.

No matter where the desire starts, it is safe to say that helping others brings people closer together. It builds a sense of community, and let’s be honest, it feels great for all involved. Happy holidays!
