Publisher’s Note: A Happy 2nd Anniversary for The Goshen News

The idea of starting a newspaper in Goshen began in 2021. Local news coverage in our stretch of the Northwest Corner was negligible and the occasional reporting by regional media did not often get below the surface, consisting of unvetted quotes and incomplete and sometimes, erroneous information. After nearly two years of putting legal and business matters in place, The Goshen News, a 501(c)3 non-profit paper, published its first edition in March of 2023. Our Editor at the time, Bert Carrison, another Goshen resident, and a freelance reporter were our only staff. It took a lot of hours to put together what we hoped would be the launch of a new local news medium. The response was positive and supportive, so we continued. At that time, The Goshen News was delivering to every door and PO Box in Goshen only, at no cost to the reader.
Today, a short two years later, The Goshen News is in 15 towns with 43 distribution sites, still at no charge to our readers. Nationally, newspapers are vanishing or are being gobbled up by big for-profit conglomerates who do not see any return on printing local news. The latest to fall is The Waterbury Republican, owned by the Pape family since 1901. It was sold to Hearst. The Torrington Register Citizen, which has been in existence since 1874, was also sold to Hearst in 2017, and now is a weekly paper instead of a daily.
The Goshen News prints investigative news articles, local sports, and other fun readables. Our goal remains to print the “Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How” of news items of concern to our communities, to fact-check everything that goes into our paper, and then let the reader decide.
Our staff generally does its work in the background, allow the news to take center stage. But on this, our 2nd Anniversary, I would like to introduce and acknowledge our very dedicated, competent and tightly knit professional and volunteer staff. I thank them all and am grateful for their participation and friendship. Their pictures and titles are in the attached gallery. So when you see them….would you please thank them.
We also thank our Donors and Advertisers for helping to keep the mission moving forward.
Looking forward, our coverage has been spreading to include events in Litchfield, Thomaston, Torrington and Winsted and will continue to grow as we are joined by additional staff and volunteers. If you would like to help cover events in your town, please contact me through the email listed on our masthead.
Finally, our thanks to the many readers who have expressed their appreciation for what we do and to whom we are happy to share this celebration of the 2nd Anniversary of The Goshen News.
Here’s to the future!
